The Beauty of France Road Trip: Strasbourg + Colmar 16.05.
Colmar is a medieval gem with a picturesque old town that looks like a page out of a storybook. With bridges arching over quaint canals, colorful half-timbered houses dotted along cobblestone alleys and an enchanting atmosphere, this is one of the most magical places to roam about and get lost in. If you are a fan of Studio Ghibli’s Japanese animated films, you will be delighted to know that Colmar was the inspiration for the setting of Howl’s Moving Castle!
09:00 Optional Activity: Boat Tour
Being one of the oldest and well-preserved towns in eastern France, the best way to experience the beauty of Colmar is to join your travel crew for a boat tour. Cruise serenely down the Ill river and admire the colors of springtime. You will also learn about the interesting history of Colmar as well as see the highlights and hidden pearls tucked away in lanes and corners.
You are also welcome to skip the boat tour if you prefer to explore the town on foot. You can stroll by the gothic wonder, St Martin’s Church, go food hunting at the local covered market, or wander around taking Instagram-worthy photos from the bridges and squares all around Colmar. You can also visit the Unterlinden Museum, which used to be a public bath building!
10:00 End of boat tour
After you hop off from the boat tour, you will have some time left to ramble around the old town of Colmar before heading towards another gem in eastern France, Strasbourg.
10:45 Gather for departure towards Strasbourg
Get ready to proceed to Strasbourg, the capital city of the Grand Est region in France.
12:00 Arrive in Strasbourg
Strasbourg exudes a unique charm, influenced by both the French and German cultures because it sits close to the German border.
The first monument you will see is the Strasbourg Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece. It is worth going up to the top of the cathedral for a bird’s-eye view of the city. From here, you can opt to go for lunch or roam around this fairytale-like city on your own.
15:00 Optional guided tour
Go on a guided tour to discover the famous landmarks and hidden gems of Strasbourg. Visit the impressive Rohan Palace, take in the modern beauty of the gigantic European Parliament Building and certainly do not miss out on the postcard-perfect Petite France district. This is a great chance to get to know more about the history of Strasbourg, so gather with your newly made friends and go on this eye-opening guided tour together. Alternatively, you are free to go off and explore Strasbourg on your own.
16:30 End of the guided tour
At the end of the tour, you can join your travel mates and continue discovering Strasbourg at your own pace.
For other fun activities, why not go on a cruise along the canals of this mesmerizing city? If being on the water does not appeal to you, then take a walk along the riverside with your travel companions instead, to soak in the idyllic vibe of Strasbourg. Cheese lovers, there are many interesting spots for you to sample delicious French cheese, and wine aficionados, do not pass on the opportunity to get to taste some quality French wines! If you are interested in art, this is the perfect time to visit the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which houses an impressive collection that is ranked one of the best in France.
