Itinerary for our Medieval Treasures of Germany: Rothenburg + Heidelberg 09.05.
Being in Rothenburg will make you feel as if you have traveled back in time. Get lost in the narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets. Peek into the ancient houses and tiny gardens flourishing with fresh blooms, stand in awe of the mighty St. James church, and before you know it, you will arrive at the famous Kobolzell Gate, which will offer you a breathtaking panorama of the town and the Tauber Valley below.
There is a Christmas Museum in Rothenburg, which introduces visitors to the history of Christmas in Germany. Even though Christmas is still months away, touring this museum will instantly put you in a festive mood. Seek out “Das Plonlein”, a famous spot where you can take an iconic photo of Rothenburg, and for a unique activity, go to “Die Waffenkammer”, where you can dress up as a medieval knight or noble lady, as well as shop for interesting souvenirs.
14:00 Departure from Rothenburg
From the medieval town of Rothenburg, we will set off towards Heidelberg, the famous university town in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
Explore the well-preserved old town of Heidelberg and slowly wander through the cobblestone streets and historic squares of the city. Heidelberg is a picturesque town so be prepared to take lots of photos. The beer gardens are great places to relax, enjoy some German beer and taste the delicious local cuisine.
Besides its famous sites and being home to the oldest university in Germany, Heidelberg is also the epicenter of arts and literature throughout the ages, and is known as a “City of Literature” by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
From the base of the funicular station, we will take a cable car to go up to the 800-year-old ruined castle, situated on the Königstuhl hill. The Heidelberg Castle is an architectural wonder, even though it is now destroyed, there is a sense of melancholic beauty lingering. You can join your travel mates on a one-hour guided tour of the castle to get to know more about the castle’s history or explore the castle grounds on your own.
After a tour of the castle, slowly walk through the mile-long pedestrian street at the base of the hill, which cuts through the well-preserved old town and leads you to various quaint shops and restaurants sprinkled around the many historic squares of the city. Everywhere you turn is a photo-worthy moment.
To fully experience the German culture, you should definitely visit a beer garden. Enjoy some good old German beers and sample local dishes such as Leberknödel, a type of dumpling, or Saumagen, which is stuffed pig’s stomach!
