45Days 05Hours 13Minutes 18Seconds
Itinerary of our Holland Explorer Road Trip: Giethoorn + Zaanse Schans 09.05.
With 2 hours of free time to roam around the area, there is so much to see and do. You will be charmed by the old houses and historic windmills dotting the green meadows. Most of the mills are now museums and shops, open for visits. If you are around the spice mill around 10:15, you can go in for a tour. You can also enter other mills to see how flour was milled or observe how the wood was sawn. Take the typically narrow flight of stairs and climb up to the deck of the windmill for a panorama of the area. This is a fantastic spot for some group photos with the new friends you meet on the tour!
To explore other parts of Zaanse Schans, you can walk into the very first Albert Heijn, which today has grown to be one of the largest supermarket chains in The Netherlands. See how this small, local grocery store used to look like in the 1800s. Curious about Dutch baked goods? Then you should try the Duivekater, a specialty sweet bread of the region, at the confectionary museum.
Do not miss the popular clog workshop, where you can see local craftsmen transform a block of wood into wearable clogs right before your eyes. Admission is free, and you can also buy clogs of all sizes and designs as well as souvenirs. Another product that is associated with Holland is cheese! Step into a farm shop to see a cheese-making demonstration and sample the world-famous Gouda cheese, taste Dutch mustard and browse for some delicious cheese to bring back with you.
12:15 Journey to Giethoorn
We will depart Zaanse Schans and head towards Giethoorn. During this approximately two-hour bus ride, you can snack on the food you bought earlier from the various shops or have a chat with your fellow travel mates about the interesting things you have just seen at Zaanse Schans.
14:30 OPTIONAL BOAT CRUISE
If you prefer to stay on land, instead of walking around the village, you can also rent a bike with some of the new friends you just made and explore the surrounding countryside to see an authentic side of Holland.
If you are into culture, then you can consider visiting the local museums. There are three interesting choices, from the Het Olde Maat Uus museum that allows you to see how a farmhouse looked like a hundred years ago, to the intriguing gemstones and minerals museum known as Museum de Oude Aarde, as well as The Histomobil for the automobile lovers who are interested in vintage cars, carriages, and motorcycles.
After all the engaging activities, you can take a break at a café or try some Dutch dishes at any of the local restaurants.
We will depart from Giethoorn and drive back to Delft.
