History buffs can visit the Stadtmuseum or the Schifffahrtmuseum to get acquainted with the original and evolution of Düsseldorf as well as its maritime success. Fans of German poet Heinrich Heine will enjoy knowing his life and work at the Heinrich Heine Institute. Cinephiles should not miss the Düsseldorf Film Museum and ceramics-lovers should definitely pay a visit to the Hetjens Deutsches Keramikmuseum.
Stroll through the old town to reach the river front then make a turn towards the historic harbour which is now a blend of old world charm and contemporary architecture. If you are keen to do some holiday shopping, then the tree-lined Konigsallee is the ideal area to go to for fashionable boutiques as well as international brands.
There is a surprising number of Japanese people living in Düsseldorf, so if you wish to experience a slice of Japanese culture, you can head to the Immermannstraße area or venture to the Eko Haus to tour a shinto temple.
There are seven Christmas markets set up all over Düsseldorf, which will get you in the festive mood. The Marktplatz area will play host to a traditional market with a century-old carousel and rows of stalls selling decorative ornaments, artisanal crafts and delicious seasonal food like bratwurst and fresh crepes. Keep warm with a mug of Glühwein as you wander along the streets, rubbing shoulders with fellow travellers. If you enjoy skating, then you should visit the market at the Kö-Bogen because you will find an ice rink there. Even though it is the second day of Christmas, with the festive lights and glorious decorations all over Dusseldorf, the holiday ambiance is not lost at all.
There are many traditional beer halls in Dusseldorf which will allow you to experience an authentic beer culture. If you need to take a break from the Christmas shopping, simply stop at one of the beer halls and treat yourself to a local brew. You can also order a warm meal at these beer halls, so take this opportunity to enjoy some local dishes such as roasted pork knuckle, liver dumpling soup and more sausages!
