Secrets of Belgium! Dinant and Ghent Road Trip 09.05.
Explore the city starting from the houses flanking the riverbank to the grand cathedral and then to the heart of the old town. Pose for photos on the famous Charles de Gaulle bridge and get ready to soak in an idyllic vibe at this picturesque city.
10:15 Optional Activity: Tour the historic Citadel
The best way to experience Dinant is to go on a guided tour to the majestic citadel. This fortress built on a giant rock has a rich history and now houses weapons in a museum that will give visitors a look into the town’s role in producing copper items in the Middle Ages. Included in your ticket is a cable car ride that will give you an amazing bird’s-eye view of Dinant from up above. Once you reach the citadel, you can also enjoy a panorama of the city, which will make for some gorgeous photos. This is definitely a tour not to be missed.
If you are not keen to go on the guided tour, you can still make your way up to the citadel, then take some time to roam around the city on your own.
11:30 End of tour
As the guided tour comes to an end, join your fellow travel companions and make your way to the meeting point to gather for departure towards Ghent.
12:00 Depart for Ghent
Journey on to Ghent, a mesmerizing medieval city in the north of Belgium
14:00 Arrive in Ghent
Set foot on this enchanting city in the Flanders region of Belgium, and you will soon see how Ghent is a vibrant melting pot, with a large student population and an inspiring cultural atmosphere. Take a break after the bus ride and go for a round of beer and snacks with your travel mates, then explore the city together.
15:00 Optional Activity: Private Boat Tour
Sail through the heart of postcard-worthy Ghent on a private boat tour and discover the city from the charming canals. Get to know the history of Ghent, see grand architecture and old buildings, and hear stories from a local point of view. This is a unique experience and will be a highlight for your visit to Ghent, so consider joining this highly-recommended boat cruise with your travel crew!
If you are more interested in seeing the city on your own, you are welcome to venture to the various squares and neighborhoods to explore at your own pace.
15:40 End of boat tour
After the eye-opening boat tour, you have more time to explore Ghent with your travel mates. Check out the UNESCO World Heritage Belfry, one of the tallest monuments in Belgium, and climb up 91 meters for the best view in the city. Visit the Gothic Saint Bavo’s cathedral, another awe-inspiring site, and with a small entrance fee, you can tour the abbey and learn about its dramatic history. Travel back in time at the Castle of the Counts and discover a dark story of torture and revolution.
Graslei and Korenlei are one of the oldest areas of Ghent, but also the heart of the city. Drop by to enjoy some famous Belgium beer with your new friends, relax at a small cafe, or to shop around for souvenirs. There is also a good selection of museums for art-buffs and cultural enthusiasts. From the Design Museum to the STAM city museum, you are bound to walk away with a colorful experience of Ghent as a vivacious city.
If you are feeling hungry, you will be able to find some must-try fluffy Belgium waffles all around Ghent or opt for the lesser-known Mastel bread, which is lightly spiced with cinnamon. Fries are also popular finger food in Ghent. Pair that with some authentically local Tierenteyn mustard! For a traditional meal and a local delicacy, look out for restaurants serving a specialty dish called “Waterzooi”, a cream-based soup that is said to originate from the Middle Ages. If you are keen to get some food as souvenirs, look out for Cuberdons, a raspberry-flavored traditional sweet.
